Build A Cloud Day - All Day Workshop

Build a Cloud Day is dedicated to teaching users how to build and manage a cloud computing environment using free and open source software. The program is designed to expose attendees to the concepts and best practices around deploying cloud computing infrastructure.

09:00 - 09:30 Welcome: Joe Brockmeier, Open Source Cloud Computing Evangelist, Citrix

Will kick off the event with a review of the program and short talk on cloud computing.

09:30 - 10:30 Delivering IaaS with CloudStack: David Nalley, Apache CloudStack

Apache CloudStack is arguably one of the most mature, frequently deployed IaaS platforms - having been used in multi-national public clouds, and private clouds scaling to tens of thousands of physical compute nodes, we’ll look at considerations for deploying CloudStack and how to gain the most efficiency from your deployment.

10:30 - 10:45 Break

10:45 - 11:30 Scaling Storage with Ceph: Ross Turk, VP Community at InkTank

Ceph is an open source distributed object store, network block device, and file system designed for reliability, performance, and scalability. It runs on commodity hardware, has no single point of failure, and is supported by the Linux kernel. This talk will describe the Ceph architecture, share its design principles, and discuss how it can be part of a cost-effective, reliable cloud stack.

11:30 - 12:15 Deploying Private PaaS with ActiveState Stackato: John Wetherill, Developer Evangelist, ActiveState

This presentation covers building and deploying a Private Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) on CloudStack. Diane Mueller, ActiveState’s Cloud Evangelist shows how to deploy ActiveState’s Stackato, an enterpriseready multi-lingual Private PaaS that runs on any cloud and supports deploying and managing web & mobile applications in any language including Java, .Net, Python, Perl, PHP Ruby, Node.js, Clojure, Scala and Erlang - to name a few. Using the CloudStack UI, Diane demonstrates how to configure and deploy the PaaS and then shows how easy it is to push a live application in under an hour.

12:15 - 1:30 Lunch

1:30 - 2:15 Scalable Networking in Apache CloudStack: Chiradeep Vittal, Citrix

We will discuss approaches to providing network security and isolation to tenants in a large-scale public cloud. A scale-up solution that uses powerful hardware devices may be suitable in some cases while a scale-out solution that uses a federation of finely tuned firewalls may be more suitable in other cases. Apache CloudStack is flexible enough to provide the cloud operator with solutions at either end of the spectrum.

2:15 - 3:00 Building the App Cloud with BitNami: Erica Brescia, CEO BitRock

This presentation will introduce the BitNami library of applications and tools and explain how you can leverage it to provide your users with one-click deployment of their favorite apps. As cloud deployment becomes mainstream, focus is expanding from infrastructure topics such as high-availability and elasticity to application-level concerns. BitNami makes it easy to deploy and manage popular open source applications so your end-users can take advantage of your bright shiny cloud from day one.

3:00 - 3:15 Break

3:15 - 4:00 Challenges in Supporting Multi-Hypervisors in CloudStack: Kelven Yang, Citrix

Kelven will discuss the CloudStack support for multiple hypervisors in a single cloud. Kelven will discuss the two integration strategies: directly managed hypervisor host clusters and externally managed hypervisor host clusters. He will also describe the challenges to be solved when giving storage volumes first-class citizenship in different hypervisor environments. Kelven will describe how CloudStack-managed HA and hypervisor-native HA and DRS can work together, and how console access is uniformly supported across hypervisors.

4:00 - 4:45 Practice your Cloud-Fu with Scalr: Sebastian Stadil, CEO Scalr

Multi-cloud this! Orchestrate that! In this amazing presentation of Cloud-Fu, Sebastian Stadil, founder of the open source cloud management software Scalr, will demonstrate basic to advanced katas for building applications on the cloud that are resilient to pesky failures.

4:45 - 5:00 Close: Joe Brockmeier, Citrix

Cloudonomics: The Cost of VMs at Scale

Much of the appeal for enterprise IT managers to introduce cloud computing within their organizations is to take advantage of the efficiencies that automation and self-service can bring to infrastructure. But the real economics of private cloud can be surprising.

Joshua McKenty, one of the founders of OpenStack, will discuss some of the surprising realities of cloud costs, including:
·     How little power efficiency REALLY matters (and where it does)
·     How much your cloud costs are dominated by reference architecture
·     How few servers you need to be running to save money by building a private cloud

Storage Consolidation & Centralization Using The Cloud

Users and administrators alike have come to rely on standard NAS functions to create, manage, share and protect file-based data throughout its lifetime. However, this functionality is limited to a single site.  Globally-distributed enterprises must deploy islands of storage across sites, inhibiting optimization, centralized management, and load balancing. Ideally, administrators should be able to install a single cloud-integrated, file-based storage system that grants visibility of all files to all users at all sites at any time, while preserving local NAS security, file locking, access control, encryption, and consistency.

This presentation will describe how Panzura solves this key technical challenges to providing file locking, encryption, deduplication, snapshots, and access control across sites, and how this solution enables cloud-integrated file sharing and project collaboration, distributed tier-2+ NAS, active archiving, and backup/DR.

·        Learn about the technical challenges of developing global cloud-integrated NAS that brings local NAS features and unlimited cloud storage to a geographically-distributed infrastructure.

·         Explore the innovations developed by Panzura to enable a full-featured, robust global file system and unified namespace

·         Discover how the Panzura Global Cloud Storage System’s inherent data protection reduces or eliminates the need for standard backup of unstructured data

·         Understand why analysts have dubbed Panzura “NetApp in the Sky”

Keynote Address by Chris Kemp (CEO, Nebula): The Enterprise Cloud Paradox

The Enterprise Cloud Paradox

Nebula CEO Chris C. Kemp – former CTO of NASA and co-founder of the OpenStack project

Startups and small businesses have been incredibly quick to adopt the cloud, with Forrester pegging the private infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) cloud market as becoming a $66.4 billion market before the decade’s out. But despite all the hype, mainstream enterprises have been slow to make cloud moves – even though they often have the most to gain from the lowered TCO, scalability and ease of management that a cloud can provide. In this talk, Nebula CEO Chris C. Kemp explains how the current model of cloud computing isn’t enough to address this paradox – and how Nebula and others in the space are working to close the gap and bring the power of the cloud to the enterprise.

Keynote Address by Val Bercovici (NetApp): Cloud Infrastructure Evolution – Science or Science Fiction?

Abstract:
Over the past few years, Internet-scale apps have driven visible benefits to mobile users and tablet-based information services. Simultaneously, less visible benefits have been the revolution in back-end infrastructure inside the data centers which power these new apps. That quiet revolution of the past decade involved scale-out technologies such as parallel processing, high-speed networking and distributed storage, which broke the bounds of traditional 3-tier architectures, POSIX storage systems, ACID databases and OSI network stacks. In this talk, NetApp's Val Bercovici will describe the new infrastructure revolution about to shape this decade - dramatic advances in processing, memory, networking and storage technologies. Come hear Val's vision of the future of Cloud-Scale Infrastructure and determine for yourself what is Science and what is Science Fiction!

Evaluating NoSQL Performance: Which Database is Right for Your Data?

The need to operate terabyte-size databases becomes very common these days. Unless you have implemented architectures that use NoSQL databases and frameworks that support data-intensive distributed applications, then many technology options available are probably a slight enigma. This session focuses on real-world successful attempt to benchmark five most popular NoSQL databases side by side. Base tool selected for the purpose of this research is Yahoo Cloud Serving Benchmark and benchmarking is performed on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud instances. We will benchmark MongoDB, Cassandra, HBase, in their default configuration, with tuned client and server side settings and we measure performance of them on 7 types of workloads.
Attendees will learn:

  • What NoSQL databases offer when it comes to solving the problem of store and retreive massive amounts of data
  • How NoSQL databases different from each other
  • Benchmark test results
  • Best practices for scaling NoSQL databases
  • Lessons learned about contender's strong and weak areas
  • Anti-Patterns (things to avoid)

What Do Real-Life Hadoop Workloads Look Like?

Within the past few years, organizations in diverse industries have adopted MapReduce-based systems for large-scale data processing. Along with these new users, important new workloads have emerged which feature many small, short, and increasingly interactive jobs in addition to the large, long-running batch jobs for which MapReduce was originally designed. These new workloads have not yet been described. We fill the gap with an empirical analysis of MapReduce traces from six separate business-critical deployments inside Facebook and at Cloudera customers in e-commerce, telecommunications, media, and retail. Our key contribution is a characterization of new MapReduce workloads which are driven in part by interactive analysis, and which make heavy use of query-like programming frameworks on top of MapReduce. These workloads display diverse behaviors which invalidate prior assumptions about MapReduce such as uniform data access, regular diurnal patterns, and prevalence of large jobs. A secondary contribution is a first step towards creating a TPC-like data processing benchmark for MapReduce.

Keynote Address: Advanced Analytics For Everyone - The New School Of Associative Thinking

The automation of cognitive thinking by machines is going to change how we make sense and make decisions.  When built to work more like human brains – by associative memories – machines can assimilate the huge amounts of data being gathered from enterprises, the Web, mobile devices, and embedded sensors into memories, constantly learning and reasoning in real time.

This cloud-scale intelligence is required by, and should be available to, everyone. To scale to every business user and consumer, deeper analytics must be freed from traditional models and the cost and latency to build them all.  As Manny will present, the democratization of intelligence requires a new school of thinking, thinking more like us to better support us.

This talk will explain how associative memories automatically capture and exploit intelligence from data.  Application examples will describe the diversity of this new approach, from sense making for national security and strategic sales to predicting context-rich vehicle maintenance and consumer behaviors.

The Dark Matter Cloud

The Cloud has forever changed the way that startups and internet-scale companies deploy and manage their infrastructure. An interesting trend is that a growing number of small and medium business are also moving big chunks of their IT infrastructure to the cloud, but their decision is not driven by features traditionally associated with big deployments such as elastic compute and storage capacity or capex/opex concerns. Instead, they are leveraging open source and the automation capabilities from leading public Cloud vendors to solve down-to-earth, everyday problems while saving money in the process. This session will cover some of these trends and provide specific examples, based on our experience at BitNami as one of the leading providers of cloud images for AWS and VMWare and providing the packaging infrastructure for most of the leading commercial open source companies.

Data Scientist Meets Enterprise IT Best Practices

It's been said that all data in the Enterprise is "Big Data". In
particular, relatively new practices such as MapReduce allow
organizations to leverage value from unstructured data -- for example,
working with large-scale collections of log files, integration of
externally available data. Generally these efforts lead toward new
products based on predictive analytics. Cascading API provides
workflow orchestration for large-scale MapReduce, particularly
well-suited for Enterprise IT, with bindings in Java, Scala, Clojure,
Python, and Ruby. Cascading is used in production at Twitter, eBay,
Trulia, AirBnB, Etsy, RapLeaf, Climate Corporation, and many others
for building predictive analytics on large-scale public and private
clouds. This talk will explore best practices and architectural
patterns for large MapReduce workflows, when robustness and
predictability are high priorities.

15 billion connected devices and 3 billion Internet users are driving the growth of modern web and mobile services and software applications. As the foundation of this all-connected ecosystem, the cloud must free today¹s applications from constraints of the past. The cloud must give businesses the freedom to run apps wherever it makes most sense and to move apps based on evolving business needs. Apps should be free from specific hardware requirements,
free to scale and free to run where most appropriate. In this keynote, Marten Mickos, CEO of Eucalyptus, will discuss how freeing your apps provides new challenges, choices and opportunities for business growth. Marten will highlight how compatibility between cloud ecosystems can drive a new dimension of performance and why today's innovative companies are solidifying their cloud strategies around an open approach.

Cloud Data Integration in the era of Hybrid IT

As companies continue to move their business processes to the cloud, cloud data integration and data management has become an integral part of a company's information infrastructure.  Though on-premises applications and data sources aren't not going to disappear completely, more are becoming cloud based and companies are looking for ways to efficiently integrate their big data across existing data sources and emerging integration technologies. As companies look to leverage the cloud for better business, moving data between on-premise sites and the cloud becomes a top concern.  In order to safely integrate data and alleviate the burden off corporate IT staff – companies are turning to solutions based on hybrid integration platform as a service technology to allow data transformation and translation in the cloud.

The desired end result: bending the best of traditional storage and cloud technology to enable a quicker response to business needs and companies in the most cost-effective manner, allowing users to maximize their return on data.

Benefits of cloud-based integration includes the:

•        Elimination of software and system procurement, deployment and management challenges

•        Acceleration of the implementation process and reduction of staff administration requirements

•        Reduction of the costs and risks associated with adopting new business applications

•        Increase in data quality, user productivity, collaboration and performance measurement capabilities

Evolution: Systems Management to Cloud Management

Virtualization & Cloud adoption has highlighted some of the key challenges associated with Systems management & software deployments.
Many companies have sprung up since then to fill this gap that has got even wider with cloud adoption.
Unfortunately, many products that came out in this space have taken a revolutionary approach, requiring SysAdmins to throw away all the good stuff they have accumulated over years, and are forced to learn new languages to use these products.
At Divine cloud, we believe, in evolution not revolution.
In this session, we will show how these challenges can be mitigated using Divine Platform, without having to learn a new language or having to throw away the existing configuration & installation scripts.

Cloud Risk Management

Moderator: Mary Beth Borgwing

Why Cloud Risk Management?

Risk Transfer Solutions and the race to provide them will be the next instantiation of the commerce of Cloud. Cloud has moved from buzz to business critical with Gartner anticipating that spending on Cloud applications will reach $150 billion by 2013.  With Enterprise poised for substantial investment, it is critical for customers, providers and investors to have an informed view of risk, policy, governance, and above all, a strategy for remediation.  Until now, the financial risk of data loss or security intrusion within the Cloud and other cyber environments has been mitigated through the reliance on Service Level Agreements or a contractual indemnity. The first method is fiscally ineffective and the second requires legal remedy.

The recent relevant regulatory intervention in the United States where the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 2011 required that all regulated firms should disclose the risk of cyber incidents. Expectations in the market are that this will trigger many firms buying cyber-insurance in order to communicate to the market information that they are properly managing these risks. The new rules also require those regulated by the SEC to evaluate and take into account all available relevant information including prior cyber security incidents and severity and frequency of those incidents. Disclosures under these rules require that the regulated firms include a description of relevant insurance coverage.
